Before You Move
Now is the time to start planning. Do a walkthrough of every room in your house, and take the opportunity to pick out any unwanted or old items that you can get rid of. A helpful rule is to try reducing your belongings by one third, if possible. It'll make packing and hauling everything that much easier. Whether you sell it at a yard sale or online, donate to a good cause, or recycle it, downsizing is best.
During this stage, you'll also want to start gathering packing materials. Hit up your local big box stores to see if they can part with any of their old boxes, and buy plenty of packing tape, labels, and other organizational tools.
As Moving Day Approaches
Packing up your home one room at a time will make the process much more approachable. Start with the lesser-used rooms, like your home office or gym, and carefully label or color-code each box by the room it belongs to.
Consider packing fragile items with your heavy winter clothing, extra throw pillows, or bubble wrap. Carefully wrap paintings or any decorations you have, and as always: label, label, label. The last thing you want when you get to your new home is to be blindly ripping open boxes until you find the right one.
During the Move
The night before your move, get all of your "must-have" belongings together. You'll want things like toiletries, your wallet and phone, a phone charger, important documents, a change of clothes, and snacks in a backpack that you have easy access to. If you're using a professional team of movers, be sure you have their information handy, as well.
Once you arrive at your new home, try to spend a few minutes cleaning the interior. After all, it'll never be this empty again for a while, so take the chance to do a deep clean. Vacuum any carpeting, scrub the kitchen and bathrooms, and be sure there's no clutter or items left from the old owners scattered around.
